NYC Marathon Goals

“If your dreams don’t scare you they aren’t big enough.”

The NYC Marathon is 6 months away! In case you didn’t see it on my Instagram or FB page, I am running this marathon for Fred’s Team.  This team raises money for Memorial Sloan Kettering for cancer research.  This cause is very near and dear to my heart because their cutting edge research saved my mom’s life in 2010!  Read more about my story and considering donating HERE!

Before I get to the point of this post – my goals for this year’s marathon, I first want to give you a little background on the marathons I have run.  In college I vowed that when I graduated I would do a marathon.  So in 2014 I ran  the Philadelphia Marathon (4:09) and then in 2015 I ran Chicago (4:19).  Looking at the times I ran frankly disappoints me and if we are being honest and I am somewhat embarrassed to share my marathon time with people.  While I am extremely proud of myself for finishing both of these races I know I have a lot more in me.  My current half marathon PR is a 1:40:35 which means that theoretically I should be able to break 4 hours in the marathon. But I have never quite gotten there.  There are many excuses I could make- I trained while on night shift, the conditions were too hot, the course too flat. And while all of those things might be true it comes down to the fact that I just wasn’t prepared.

 

My first marathon- Philadelphia 2014

This year I have vowed will be different. If doing triathlons has taught me anything its that my mind and body are capable of so much more than I ever imagined.  I am mentally and physically the strongest I have ever been and I think that is going to be a huge advantage this training cycle.  I will also go straight from half ironman training into marathon training which will be difficult but I believe will lead me to success.  Because of the closeness of my two races I have decided to work with a tri/run coach! More on that soon when I start working with her at the end of May.  I am so excited to have someone give me workouts that will push me and lead me to do my best.

 

 

2nd Marathon! Chicago 2015 

Ok, enough of me talking about all of the ways I am stronger and plan to run better/faster, I’m sure you are just here to see my time goals.  As always my #1 goal is to have FUN!! The minute that I become so wrapped up in numbers and lose my love of running I will have failed myself.  I am kind of scared to be writing these numbers down on “paper” and sharing with everyone but at the same time it is a great way to hold myself accountable. So without further ado….here are my goals for NYC Marathon 2017:

Stretch Goal: 3:35 (BQ!)

A Goal: 3:45

B Goal: Break 4 hours

C Goal: Finish

Over 26.2 miles anything can happen so I am setting myself up for success by training hard and having multiple goals in mind.  I know that these are all huge PRs from my current marathon but I truly believe I have it in me and that is step one of having a successful race.
